Position Overview
The Lead – New Programs Costing & Budgeting will be responsible for driving end-to-end costing and budgeting activities for new product development (NPD) programs. The role focuses on cost optimization, design-to-cost initiatives, and cross-functional collaboration to improve gross margins while supporting agile product development in a hardware-focused organization.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead new program costing and budgeting activities across the product lifecycle
- Identify cost reduction and optimization opportunities across part, assembly, logistics, and packaging costs
- Collaborate with engineering, sourcing, manufacturing, product, and finance teams to embed cost considerations early in development
- Perform detailed cost analysis on new designs using a design-to-cost approach
- Influence design decisions to optimize BOM costs for new, redesigned, or conceptual parts and assemblies
- Define and implement cost targets for new programs
- Prepare and manage NPD program budgets (Capex and Opex)
- Monitor product costs and track variances throughout the development process
- Apply first-principles thinking in financial and cross-functional decision-making
Qualifications & Experience
- BE in Mechanical / Electrical / Mechatronics Engineering
- 10–15 years of experience in product-based hardware companies
- Strong exposure to agile ways of working in product development environments
Technical & Functional Skills
- Strong understanding of manufacturing processes:
Casting, Machining, Forging, Injection Moulding, Sheet Metal, Fabrication, Compression Moulding, Coating, Welding - Basic understanding of electronics and electrical systems
- Exposure to PCBA and wire harness manufacturing; should-costing experience is a plus
- Hands-on experience with product development lifecycle in hardware companies
- Expertise in should-costing / zero-based costing for parts and assemblies
- Strong understanding of EBOM / MBOM and BOM preparation
- Experience in zero-based budgeting for NPD programs (Capex & Opex)
- Ability to assess projects financially across cross-functional swim lanes and represent the finance perspective
